Acne

Acne is very common. It is highly visible and can cause psychological distress such as embarrassment, low self-esteem, depression and social withdrawal. Although teenagers are most commonly affected, many adults in their 30’s and beyond still suffer from acne. A significant number of women in their late 20’s and early 30’s develop a “hormonal” type of acne with deep cysts and nodules on the lower part of the face and jawline. Unfortunately, there is no age limit for this potentially disfiguring disease.

There are different forms of acne and the symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Acne can present as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and nodules. Although the face is most commonly affected, acne outbreaks can also appear on the neck, back, chest, upper arms and buttocks. Once the acne subsides, they can leave dark spots that take many weeks or months to gradually fade. Severe Cystic and nodular acne sometimes lead to permanent scarring.

While mild cases of acne may respond to certain over-the-counter treatments, more severe cases may require prescription medications. At Lucent Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center, we take all acne cases seriously. We are dedicated to treating acne and preventing acne scar formation. We may recommend a combination of topical and oral medications including oral antibiotics and spironolactone, or in extreme cases, Accutane. Some patients may also benefit from chemical peels, laser treatment, or photodynamic therapy. Our providers are all registered prescribers of Accutane through the I-Pledge program. It’s important to know that acne cannot be cured overnight. It may take many weeks before it starts to respond to treatment. At Lucent Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center, we will help you find the best-customized treatment plan.
